Pattaya to Ekkamai Bus in 2026 | Same-Day Tickets and Peak-Season Wait Times

You can still buy a bus ticket from Pattaya to Bangkok (Ekkamai) on the same day. On a normal weekday, arriving about 30 minutes before departure is often enough.

That changes quickly on busy travel days. Lines get longer, same-day seats disappear, and the cheapest option can suddenly mean hours of waiting.

I had already booked the 2:00 PM bus online, so I did not have to join the sales line. Instead, I went straight to the check-in counter, showed my confirmation email, and received a paper ticket within minutes. That contrast made the value of advance booking very clear.

How Crowded Does the Pattaya to Ekkamai Bus Get on Busy Days?

When I arrived at North Pattaya Bus Terminal at 1:10 PM, the line for same-day ticket purchases had already stretched close to the terminal exit.

According to the departure board, the next Ekkamai bus was sold out. The one after that was also full. The earliest available departure was after 4:20 PM, which meant a wait of more than three hours.

This happened during Lunar New Year, but the point is broader than that one holiday. Similar lines can form during Songkran, long weekends, and other busy travel periods in Pattaya.

Some travelers started looking for taxis instead. But for this distance, the fare rises quickly. Going via Suvarnabhumi Airport is another option, yet airport buses were also busy that day, and you still need to continue into central Bangkok from the airport.

When Same-Day Tickets Become Risky

On a normal day, arriving 30 minutes before departure is often enough. The real problem is that you do not always know in advance whether your day will be quiet or crowded.

Same-day purchase becomes risky when conditions like these overlap:

  • Major holidays in Thailand or Chinese-speaking markets, such as Lunar New Year
  • Songkran or the year-end/New Year holiday period
  • Large events in Pattaya
  • Weekend afternoons, when many travelers head back after hotel check-out

Afternoon buses tend to fill faster because many travelers leave Pattaya after hotel check-out and head back to Bangkok.

Even if seats are available in the morning, they can disappear quickly after midday.

In my case, it was a Thursday, but still within the Lunar New Year period. Same-day purchase is cheaper, but it works best only when you are fairly sure the day will stay quiet.

How Online Booking Works at North Pattaya Bus Terminal

I had booked the 2:00 PM bus to Ekkamai online in advance and paid by credit card. After booking, all I needed was the confirmation email on my phone.

I arrived at North Pattaya Bus Terminal around 1:10 PM. There was already a long line in front of the ticket counter, but advance-booked passengers do not need to join that line.

Facing the building from the front, Counter No. 1 on the left is the counter for advance bookings. There was a clear “Check in” sign, and that is where I completed the process.

The process was straightforward:

  1. Open the booking confirmation on your phone
  2. Show it to the staff
  3. Receive a paper ticket on the spot

No printout was required. I was also not asked to show my passport.

From arrival to ticket issuance took only a few minutes. While the sales line moved slowly, advance check-in was quick. After receiving the ticket, I waited in the seating area until staff started boarding.

Counter No. 1 is also used by passengers with advance bookings for the Pattaya to Suvarnabhumi Airport bus. If you are traveling between Pattaya and the airport, I also covered both the Pattaya to Suvarnabhumi Airport bus route and the Suvarnabhumi Airport to Pattaya route in separate guides.

Luggage Handling | Suitcases Are Accepted

I had no trouble checking a large suitcase.

On this route, each passenger can check one piece of luggage up to 20 kg free of charge.

Caption: Extra charges apply if your luggage exceeds 20 kg

If your bag exceeds 20 kg, or if you have oversized or additional luggage, extra charges apply. According to the official rules, the surcharge ranges from 20 to 300 THB.

My suitcase was under 20 kg, so I paid nothing extra.

Luggage is loaded into the compartment below the bus. Unlike some airport buses, there is no baggage tag or claim stub. After arrival, passengers collect their own bags.

Even on a busy day, it still worked without much confusion, but baggage handling did not feel particularly strict.

A few important booking rules are also worth noting:

  • Tickets are non-refundable
  • You must collect the ticket at least 30 minutes before departure
  • Late arrival may invalidate the booking
  • Animals are not allowed on board

Even with online booking, punctuality still matters.

Official Website vs 12Go | Which Booking Option Is Better?

If you want to book ahead, you basically have two options.

Official Website (Roong Reuang Coach)

  • Fare: 155 THB
  • Online service charge: 10 THB
  • Payment by credit card available
  • Ticket pickup at Counter No. 1 on the day of travel

12Go

  • Additional platform fee applies
  • Easier interface for international users
  • Useful for comparing buses, vans, and other transport options
  • Sells the same bus services as the official operator

12Go is slightly more expensive, but for many travelers the booking process is easier. Since it handles the same departures as the official website, it is a practical option if convenience matters more than saving a small fee.

Same-Day vs Advance Booking | Which One Makes More Sense?

ItemSame-Day PurchaseAdvance Booking
Waiting timeCan exceed 3 hoursUsually minimal
Risk of sold out departuresHigh on busy daysMuch lower
FareCheapestSlightly higher
Stress levelHighLow

During peak periods, even a weekday can get messy.

On quiet weekdays, same-day purchase often works. That is exactly why advance booking matters: crowd levels are hard to read until it is too late.

How Many Days in Advance Should You Book?

In my case, booking two days in advance during Lunar New Year was enough to secure the 2:00 PM departure.

From what I could see, same-day online booking did not appear to be available.

So when should you book?

Book 2–3 Days Ahead During Peak Travel Periods

This includes dates such as:

  • Lunar New Year
  • Songkran
  • Year-end and New Year holidays
  • Pattaya International Fireworks Festival
  • Long weekends
  • Major event days in Pattaya, such as Pattaya Marathon

These are predictable high-demand dates. Same-day purchase is not something to gamble on.

Pattaya Marathon is one example of an event weekend when both inbound and outbound buses can be busier than usual. For race dates, road closures, and hotel-location tips, see the Pattaya Marathon 2026 guide.

Book in Advance If You Need a Specific Departure

Morning and afternoon departures can fill first. If you are traveling on a day when timing matters, such as a flight day, advance booking is the safer choice.

If your schedule is flexible, same-day purchase can still work on quieter days. In that case, the trade-off is simple: you save a little money, but you may have to wait if buses start filling up. That is usually acceptable on an ordinary weekday, but it becomes a much riskier choice during peak periods.

Conclusion | Same-Day Tickets Are Fine on Quiet Days, but Not on Busy Ones

Roong Reuang Coach bus from Pattaya to Bangkok parked at the terminal
Pattaya to Ekkamai buses depart from North Pattaya Bus Terminal

The Pattaya to Ekkamai bus can usually be bought on the same day.

But peak-season travel is different. Waiting several hours is entirely possible.

On a quiet day, buying on the spot is often fine. But if you need a specific departure or cannot afford to miss your bus, booking ahead is the safer choice.
